Will increase companies' knowledge of music

Music creates value – not only for individuals, but also for businesses. Now, rights organizations TONO and Gramo are launching the concept "The Value of Music" to help Norwegian businesses better understand the power of thoughtful use of music.

A study from England showed that 8 out of 10 customers in a wine shop bought French wine when French music was playing. And similarly, 7 out of 10 bought German wine when German music was playing. The study is also supported by others: Music affects us – even when we are customers.

For the first time, they can now create these agreements simultaneously – in one place, says Rita Mamelund. Photo: Suzanne Nyhuus.

Now the organizations TONO and Gramo want to raise the level of knowledge of Norwegian businesses about music, and at the same time want to contribute information about which music rights must be clarified if one wants to use music in customer premises and other public contexts:

– Those who use music in their business must, under Norwegian law, pay those who own the music through TONO and Gramo. Now we are addressing the market together because we also want to tell about the value potential that lies in a conscious music strategy, and provide insight into why it is important that those who make music get paid. The first edition of the paper magazine “The Value of Music” is on its way to 3000 newly established businesses this week. We hope readers appreciate the good music stories, says Rita Mamelund, Communications Manager at Gramo.

– Although TONO and Gramo work for different types of rights holders in the music industry, we have common customers when it comes to the background music market. By joining forces in the concept of The Value of Music, we can effectively and visibly provide important information that will hopefully inspire companies while also providing them with information about the necessity of having agreements with TONO and Gramo, says Willy Martinsen, Head of Communications at TONO.

One platform – Two agreements

With "The Value of Music", the two companies have also made it easier than ever to obtain the necessary licenses. The website verdienavmusikk.no contains not only good articles and information, but also a comprehensive registration form. . When you fill this out, the information goes to both companies - and you have secured both the agreements you need and are on safe ground legally when it comes to the two companies.

It will of course still be possible to enter into agreements directly with each individual organization, but if you use the form on verdienavmusikk.no, the inquiry will go to both organizations, and thus it is now easier to obtain the agreements than before, says Willy Martinsen at TONO.

– We know that music rights can be difficult to get an overview of, but with an agreement with TONO and Gramo, companies can play all the world's music. For the first time, they can now create these agreements at the same time – in one place. We believe and hope that companies appreciate it, says Rita Mamelund.
