Norway's first comprehensive review of the music field is a major and important undertaking. TONO is making its knowledge of the copyright economy available to the committee.
/ 31/08/2023 / Kristian DugstadA comprehensive study of the music field will be ready in the spring of 2025. This NOU is the first of its kind, and will hopefully become an important document for Norwegian music.
– We are lucky to have a diverse music scene in Norway. From volunteerism and grassroots local activities, to large professional organizations, songwriters and artists on the world stage. To fulfill its mandate, the report must embrace this entire breadth of Norwegian music, says Karl Vestli, CEO of TONO
The government's stated goal with the investigation is to ""improve the conditions for music activities, efficient use of resources and a continued vibrant music life throughout the country"
– Succeeding in this requires an in-depth understanding of the entire music industry ecosystem.
As with choirs, bands and volunteering, the framework conditions for those who create and make a living from music, their challenges and finances must be given a central place in this report.
– For almost 100 years, TONO has managed the rights of composers, songwriters and lyricists. Our 40,000 members and their millions of foreign colleagues represent a turnover of over 800 million kroner in copyright in Norway, says Vestli.
This makes TONO the largest company in the Norwegian music industry in terms of revenue. Although no representatives from TONO will sit on the committee, Vestli emphasizes that the management organization is ready to contribute with its extensive expertise.
– We make our expertise and experience available, and look forward to good cooperation with the committee.
TONO is pleased that NOPA's 1st Vice-Chair, Samsaya Sampda Sharma, was appointed last week. Her experience as a songwriter and artist from the commercial field will undoubtedly be a strength for the committee.
