Comment from the TONO director

Value for everyone who creates and uses music

TONO's vision is to create value for everyone who creates and uses music. We know that stores sell more when the right music is played in the background, that music creates the right atmosphere in bars and restaurants, and that the soundscape helps the documentary film have the right effect. Our members contribute with their lyrics and compositions, and our payouts reflect this value created for users.

So far this year, payouts to our members have been record high. This tells us that TONO's members are creating value like never before, and that we who work at TONO are doing an important job for both users and creators of music.

We recently reported on a Nordic study related to sustainability in the music industry. It told us that it is particularly in the areas of diversity, equality and mental health that our organization can create the greatest change. We at TONO want to take this seriously, and going forward, our work related to sustainability will be directed towards this.

This summer we held two annual meetings that resulted in decisions on new main principles for the billing model in TONO. We are pleased with this, and it ensures that our billing model is in line with regulations and international practice. Going forward, we will continue to work on introducing both this and new tariffs for the concert area.

TONO is currently budgeting for our activities in 2025. We are in a phase where we are making major changes to our technical solutions. We are starting to see results from our investments, and we recently implemented a new solution for automatic identification of repertoire and playlists. This contributes to more accurate billing and a less manual process. Our change program "Mjølnir" continues in 2025, and several of the projects will be completed in the coming year.

In recent weeks, we have presented the annual EDVARD Awards and the new Anne Grete Preus Award. They go to creators who have particularly distinguished themselves and left their mark in their fields. For TONO, these awards are a reminder that our members touch something deep with both the audience and their music-making colleagues. We believe this is inspiring for all our members, and it is also motivating for all of us who work at TONO.
