More than half of the Norwegian population has been to a concert in the last 12 months. It also seems that Norwegians enjoy going to concerts more than Swedes, and it is primarily pop, and then rock, that draws us to concert halls.

In TONO's Digital Music 2015 survey conducted by the analysis company YouGov among Norwegians aged 12-65, 57 percent state that they have been to a concert in the last 12 months. Among those who have been to a concert, a full 47 percent say that they have been to more than 3 concerts in the last 12 months. 4 percent say they have been to more than 10 concerts. As if that were not enough, 67 percent of us also say that it is unthinkable not to listen to music in our daily lives.

TONO facilitates all concerts in Norway by granting permission for the performance of protected music on behalf of its owners: Those who have written and own the works that are performed (composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers). In 2014, 56 million of TONO's income came from the concert sector. Now the organization has asked Norwegians directly about their attitudes towards, and interest in, "live" music.
– More than half of all Norwegians between the ages of 12 and 67 stated in the survey that they had been to a concert in the past year. This is evidence of a music-interested population that actively seeks out good, live music experiences. Not least, it is worth noting that it seems that we enjoy going to concerts even more than the Swedes, says TONO's communications manager Willy Martinsen.
The survey was also conducted in Sweden, where 52 percent of respondents said they had been to a concert in the past year – compared to 57 percent of Norwegians. Incidentally, 46 percent of Swedes said they had been to more than 3 concerts in the period.
In Norway, the 18-29 age group is the most likely to have been to a concert in the past 12 months, and it is also the group where the most people (50%) have been to a concert more than 3 times in the past 12 months. The survey also shows that it is those living in the most urban areas (over 50,000 inhabitants) who are the most likely (64 percent) to have been to a concert in the past year, and the most likely to have been to more than 3 concerts (54%).
– How often one goes to a concert is naturally related to one's life situation. Young adults who live in cities have both the time and opportunity to take advantage of a rich concert offering, and naturally rank at the top among those who go to concerts most often. We should also not forget that many Norwegian artists also have a lot of touring activity in the rural areas, not least during this Christmas season, and that it is an important source of income for those whose professional path is to create and perform the music we all enjoy, says Willy Martinsen.
