75 percent of Norwegians believe that background music contributes positively to a visit to a cafe, restaurant, pub, shopping mall, etc. This is shown by a new survey conducted by the analysis company YouGov on behalf of TONO.
/ 04/09/2017 / Willy MartinsenBackground music creates a good atmosphere – now it can be stated with certainty. The analysis company YouGov has asked more than 4000 Scandinavians, including 1007 Norwegians, what they think about background music in restaurants and other public spaces. 75 percent of Norwegians believe that background music contributes positively to a visit to restaurants and in companies' customer premises.
– We also note that only 16 percent believe that background music does not have a positive impact when visiting customer premises or restaurants. We also know from other surveys that the correct use of background music helps customers stay longer in stores and makes the shopping experience a positive one, and the same obviously applies to restaurants, says Cato Strøm, CEO of TONO.

The survey also asked Norwegians whether they prefer to hear background music they are familiar with or not. Here too, Norwegians are clear – 70 percent prefer music they have heard before.
– This does not mean that you should only play radio hits. The most important choice is to have a music profile that matches the company's values and other profile, and that also reflects the customer segment you want to attract. If a restaurant specializes in Mexican, Cuban or Italian food, experience shows that this should be reflected in the music offered to guests, says Cato Strøm.
All companies in Norway that have customer premises and where they wish to use background music managed by TONO and Gramo must have an agreement with the companies. The agreements provide a license for the use, while the paying customers know that they are contributing financially to songwriters, musicians and artists being able to have income from their music creation, and thus be able to create new music for the benefit of the businesses.
