TONO is now launching an effort to increase knowledge and understanding of songwriting and composition. The project is called "TONO Sessions", and consists of 10 in-depth interviews with 10 of the country's most respected songwriters and composers.

– Norway would have been poor without songs to sing or listen to. We want to make Norwegians more aware of the great value and joy that Norwegian songwriters, composers and lyricists give us all. And that is why we are launching TONO Sessions, a video interview series with 10 outstanding representatives of the profession, says communications manager Willy Martinsen at the management organization TONO, which is the producer of the films.

The 10 who are interviewed about composition and songwriting are Bjørn Eidsvåg, Magnus Grønneberg, Frøy Aagre, Hanne Sørvaag, Julian Skar, Martin Horntveth, Marie Munroe, Don Martin, Gabrielle Leithaug and Amund Maarud. Each of the ten films is about 10 minutes long, and offers low-key and unhurried performances of some of their most famous works. The films will be released one by one throughout the fall. At the main launch on Wednesday, August 20, two films will be released, the interviews with Bjørn Eidsvåg and Gabrielle Leithaug, respectively.

– Lifelong fascination with songwriting
The video series is produced by the management organization TONO in collaboration with songwriter and artist Askil Holm. For a number of years, Holm has combined his own songwriting and artist career with the teaching program "Låtmakerne", where students from middle and high school to university music students and adults learn to write music. Holm interviews the 10 songwriters and composers in the interview series:

– I come from a strong songwriting tradition in Trøndelag, and have a lifelong fascination with songwriting and composition. I have a burning desire for more people to discover this wonderful profession and craft. It has been a privilege to have the opportunity to sit down with some of the country's most talented music creators, and have them reveal some secrets about writing music, says Holm.

– Increased recruitment
TONO hopes the films will be of benefit to both those who listen to music and those who create it:

– We hope TONO Sessions will inspire someone to create their first song or song lyrics. At the same time, we hope more people will discover how much society has left to create good frameworks for music creators, for example through copyright, which gives both dignity and salt to the food of those who create the music we all enjoy, says Willy Martinsen.

The filming was done at the Riksscenen in Oslo, and the film agency Sheriff handled all the technical aspects of the production.

About TONO:
TONO is a non-profit cooperative, founded in 1928, owned and managed by its members: composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. TONO manages performance rights for musical works in Norway and collects remuneration for their public performance. TONO currently represents approximately 25,000 Norwegian composers, lyricists and music publishers. Through mutual representation agreements with similar companies in other countries, TONO practically manages the entire world repertoire. As a non-profit enterprise, TONO's results are transferred to the rights holders in performed works. TONO thus facilitates the use of music in society, while at the same time providing TONO's members with a basis for constantly creating new musical works.
