How much Norwegian music do Norwegians actually stream? Debates in recent years have been based on estimates. In a seminar at Bylarm today, TONO will reveal for the first time what the proportion actually is across services.
/ 28/02/2014 / codexTONO licenses the streaming services for the Norwegian market, and settles streaming royalties to the rights holders. TONO is thus in a unique position to be able to say what the real Norwegian share of streaming services actually is. The figure will be presented during TONO's streaming debate "The Sky is the limit?" on Bylarm on Friday.
The debate will be led by Knut Schreiner, and will include panelists Marte Thorsby (CEO of IFPI), Ine Hoem (artist and songwriter), Erik Brataas (CEO of Phonofile) and Kjartan Slette (Chief Strategy Officer of Wimp). The Norwegian share is one of the topics to be discussed in the debate.
The streaming economy has exploded in recent years. The income of songwriters and musicians has doubled year by year since 2009. Although streaming has become the dominant technology for music consumption, many Norwegian musicians and songwriters experience that their income is small. This is related to the low Norwegian share. – “Everyone” knows that the Norwegian share is low. We will reveal the number in our debate, but the most interesting thing is still why Norwegians listen to so little of their own music, compared to other Nordic countries. Could there be something in the Norwegian public psyche that makes us prefer foreign music? Is it the musicians and songwriters who are not creating sufficiently marketable music within the framework of the new music economy? We hope that the debate will create greater clarity in this, and that we can thereby contribute to Norwegian songwriters, musicians and the industry in general being able to relate more constructively to the question, and exploit the opportunities that lie in the digital distribution channels, says Inger Elise Mey, Director of the Online Area at TONO.
