On Wednesday, cultural life gathered at Eidsvolls plass. TONO was among the organizations represented. Here you can read CEO Cato Strøm's speech.
/ 20/01/2022 / Willy MartinsenThis is TONO's support for all of you in the organizing ranks. There is a mutual dependence between us.
The payments from TONO to Norwegian creators for concert performances are the most important income for many of TONO's 37,000 members.
Composers, lyricists and music publishers who find that their songs and musical works cannot be performed on concert stages that would normally be available are feeling the pinch in their wallets. Revenues plummet or disappear completely.
When TONO asked 1000 of its most active TONO members in the fall of 2020 how the coronavirus had affected them, 7 out of 10 said they were concerned about their own ability to make a living from music in the coming years. A generation of creators and musicians may now have to find other ways to make a living.
From 2019 to 2020, their income plummeted by NOK 50 million. Authors and music publishers were not included in the compensation and stimulus schemes that came in the fall of 2020. Fortunately, the government listened to us and in 2021 TONO received compensation that amounted to 70% of the losses. The money was paid out according to the guidelines given by the ministry, and we know that this was welcome money.
So I want to say something that may not have been said before. Many of our creators tour abroad. They haven't been able to do that after covid-19. But that's their market. That market is gone, and they're falling between two chairs and left with NOK 0.
Thank you for me.
