AI music on trial: Gema vs. Suno

Friday 11.09 at 10:00 - Dansens Hus 2

Here we offer a real top panel when copyright lawyer and department director for International at TONO, Inger Elise Mey, leads a conversation where we have invited good friends from Danish Koda and German Gema. Here is the event description:

GEMA v. Suno – and the battle over what's inside the machine

Can generative AI companies train their models on copyrighted music without permission – and without paying the people who actually created it? This summer, a German court gave us one of the clearest answers yet.

In a landmark ruling, the Munich Regional Court found that AI music company Suno had infringed copyright by using protected works represented by GEMA. The decision addresses some of the biggest questions surrounding generative AI: What happens to music during AI training? Can protected works be "memorized" inside an AI model? Does text and data mining provide a legal safe harbor – and who is responsible when AI generates recognizable elements of existing music?

In this panel Dr. Armelle Grandjean (Legal Counsel at GEMA) and Nicky Valbjørn Trebbien (Legal and Public Affairs Director at Koda) take us inside the case and discuss what the ruling could mean for music, copyright and AI across Europe.

What did the court actually decide – and what happens next?
