TONO had a turnover of NOK 541,9 million last year. The largest growth came from the concert area with revenues of NOK 70,6 million, an increase of 17,5 percent from the previous year. TONO also has good revenues from other areas, including abroad and streaming services.
/ 29/05/2017 / codex– The concert market is an important source of income for composers and lyricists. Radio also provides good income, but the needle's eye is narrower there. Streaming income is probably primarily noticeable among those who write hits, or who have a large and widely used back catalog. For the broad group of Norwegian authors, it is therefore the concert business that provides the largest and most important income, which is also related to the fact that it is primarily Norwegian artists that Norwegians want to see. A full 70 percent of the concert income goes to TONO's members, says Cato Strøm, CEO of TONO.

Jonas Alaska: – Important income
The income from TONO is a major and important contributor to nearly 30.000 composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. TONO collects income from public performances of music, and pays out royalties to both TONO members and millions of other creators around the world when the music is used in concerts, on radio and TV, online or in other public contexts.
– Concerts provide very important income for me as a songwriter, and not just an artist. The fact that I have income from the songs when they are played out through TONO is very valuable, and actually absolutely fundamental for me to be able to make a living from this, says Jonas Alaska, who is one of the TONO members who has really been active on the concert front in the last couple of years.

Stable from broadcasting. Strong growth in concert and background music
– In the media area, which includes broadcasting, online and retransmission, we had NOK 329,5 million in revenue, and this is our largest business area, says Cato Strøm. – The strong growth in the concert area is due to hectic activity in the concert market and targeted work from TONO to collect remuneration where music is used. The fact that members are also good at telling us about concerts held is also a great help to us.
Other important business areas for TONO are background music in hotels, restaurants, etc., where revenues increased by 7,2 percent and ended at 67,2 million kroner. The use of Norwegian music abroad also provides TONO with high revenues. In 2016, revenues were 40,9 million, down from 43,6 million the previous year. The decrease is solely due to the fact that revenues from Germany were not transferred to TONO until the new year 2017. The fact is that Norwegian music is increasingly used abroad.
Streaming services in positive growth
TONO's streaming revenue comes from services such as Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music, but also from movie streaming services such as Netflix, an area that is experiencing positive growth for TONO.
– Within the digital area, we invoiced approximately 115 million in 2016. In comparison, online revenues in 2015 were 101,8 million, says Cato Strøm.
TONO gained 1,515 new members during 2016, and in total TONO members registered 29,000 new works with the organization. TONO received approximately 21,700 concert reports during 2016. The gender distribution among members is 80 percent men and 20 percent women.
