/ 15/06/2017 / Willy MartinsenThe Polaris Nordic Alliance, consisting of TONO, Danish KODA and Finnish Teosto, is now establishing a joint research and development initiative under the name "Polaris Futures Lab". The R&D initiative was launched today at the "Sonar+D" conference in Barcelona.
With the joint initiative, TONO, Koda and Teosto are working together towards a leading role in the future of copyright management in musical works by investing in new technology and new services for music creators and music publishers, as well as music users. The aim of the initiative is to completely rethink the existing work processes within the collective management model, with the aim of increasing the speed, efficiency and transparency of the administration of performance royalties.

Radical innovation around collective management
The first phase of the Polaris Futures Lab will focus on identifying key areas for adopting new technologies and development processes, in a way that will enable a radical rethinking of the existing collective management model. The results of the work in the Polaris Futures Lab will be rolled out in the Polaris companies from 2018. The concept has been developed by Teosto Futures Lab, Teosto's innovation platform launched in 2016, commissioned by the three companies. With an initial focus of 12 months, the Polaris Futures Lab team, where resources from TONO also contribute, will begin its work in August 2017 with a concept building phase to identify development tracks and possible problem areas for the project.
– Building on our already successful collaboration in research and development within the IT area, Polaris Futures Lab is a significant step in taking the Polaris collaboration further. We use both our own and external IT expert environments in the work, which is of great strategic importance for TONO in the years ahead, says TONO CEO, Cato Strøm.
