Polaris Hub, a company owned by TONO, Danish Koda and Finnish Teosto, which negotiates with music streaming services on behalf of their owner companies, has now entered into an agreement with TikTok. This will allow TONO members to receive revenue from TikTok when their music is used on the service.

The licensing agreement negotiated with TikTok by Polaris HUB for the owner companies TONO, Koda and Teosto, as well as Icelandic Stef, means that TikTok now has permission to use the music the companies manage, and they will also pay for the music and report what is used.
– We are pleased that the agreement with TikTok is now in place. Music has great value for both TikTok and the service's users, and now Norwegian songwriters, composers and lyricists will receive compensation from TONO when their music is used on the service, says TONO CEO, Cato Strøm.
The agreement is retroactive, and means that TikTok will pay for the use of music from when TikTok was launched.
More and more people are streaming music on social media platforms. The Polaris Digital Music Survey, conducted earlier this year by market research company YouGov on behalf of TONO, Koda and Teosto, showed that TikTok has experienced strong growth over the past two years. In Norway, 18 percent stream music on the service, compared to 10 percent in 2020. Among young people aged 12 to 17, 30 percent said that it was on TikTok that they last discovered a song they liked.
Polaris Hub, which negotiated the contract, is a joint venture established by the Nordic collective management companies TONO, Koda (DK) and Teosto (FIN). Polaris Hub acts on behalf of all three organizations when negotiating and concluding agreements with international digital music services. Polaris Hub has also previously negotiated Nordic agreements with Meta (Facebook & Instagram), Apple, Spotify, YouTube and SoundCloud. Payment of remuneration to composers, songwriters and music publishers is made by each country's collective management organization to its respective members.
