TONO settles this week kr 191 million to composers, lyricists and music publishers at home and abroad, of which 104,6 million goes to TONO members. The autumn settlement includes the year's large concert settlement as usual, and constitutes the highest quarterly settlement in TONO's history.

Music fills concert halls, cinemas, radio and TV channels, streaming services and film streaming services, shops, cafes, pubs, hair salons and other public settings. Some music is still sold in physical formats, and Norwegian music is also listened to abroad.
All this music usage, combined with the work of 64 TONO employees in negotiation and sales work, invoicing, report collection, and processing and quality assurance of billions of data files, results in the highest quarterly settlement from TONO ever.
– We are paying a total of NOK 191 million to composers, songwriters and music publishers who have had their music performed. Of this, NOK 104,6 million goes to members of TONO and NOK 82 million to rights holders abroad. The reason why the Norwegian share is high in this payment is mainly that this is the year's major concert payment. Of the repertoire performed at concerts, there is always a large proportion of TONO repertoire, and this is naturally reflected in the payment, says membership director Christian Onshus.
As always, an amount is also set aside for unidentified rights holders and musical works, as yet unannounced musical works, non-members and disputed rights. This time, this amounts to kr 4,4 millions.
TONO settles a total of approximately NOK 44 million in this area, of which NOK 9,5 million goes to TONO's members, which is related to the low Norwegian share in this area. The broadcasting settlement is distributed over music performed on 14 NRK channels, 10 Bauer Media channels, 9 P4 channels and local radio for the use of music in the first quarter of 2019, and a final settlement is settled for Bauer Media and the P4 group for the performance year 2017. From the TV area, settlements are made for five NRK channels, 7 TV2 channels and TV Norge, for the use of music in the first quarter of 2019.
The autumn settlement means, as mentioned above, the year's major concert settlement, and within this area, TONO is settling this week in excess of NOK 92 million for concerts, festivals, church services, exhibitions and more for 2018, as well as the three areas of mega concerts, theater and revue which are settled continuously each quarter.
Through its cooperation agreements with sister societies in other countries, TONO has obtained kr 18.6 million kroner to the members. The countries that provide the largest income this time are Germany (6,9 million), the USA (approx. 2,8 million), England (approx. 1,9 million), Finland (approx. 1,7 million) and Denmark (approx. 1,1 million). Foreign income covers areas such as radio and TV, concerts and music and film streaming in countries outside the Nordic region.
If we look at film and music streaming from the Nordics, this amounts to approximately NOK 14,2 million in total. These funds are settled for Spotify for February 2019 - May 2019, Tidal for January 2019 - February 2019, Apple Music for Q4 2018, YouTube for Q1 2019 as well as smaller settlements for Beatport, Phonofile and iTunes and Gyldendal (Salaby and Explore). From the video on-demand services, TONO settles for HBO Nordic for 2017, Netflix for Q4 2018, Google Play for Q1 2019, Microsoft Movies & TV for 2018, TV2 Sumo and Hayu for 2018.
In addition to the above areas, TONO settles for music use in the second half of 2018 on 9 TV channels within the TV distribution area, from the background music area, for premiere performances for music in cinema films for 2018, physical sales of CDs, DVDs, cassettes and more and audiovisual synchronization, this last area typically known as the NCB settlement. This amounts to approximately NOK 5,4 million.
Last but not least, there are also routine subsequent settlements for previous periods (maximum 3 years back) in the broadcasting area, concert area, cinema, etc., as well as corrections.
TONO is a non-profit cooperative, founded in 1928, owned and managed by its members: composers, lyricists and music publishers. TONO manages performance rights for musical works in Norway, and collects remuneration for their public performance. TONO has more than 33,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers as direct members. Through cooperation agreements with similar companies in other countries, TONO also manages the rights of approximately 3 million authors in the Norwegian territory. As a non-profit enterprise, TONO's results are transferred to the rights holders in performed musical works. TONO thus facilitates the use of music in society, while at the same time providing authors with a basis for constantly creating new musical works. For more information, visit www.tono.no.
