TONO settles NOK 190,3 million

TONO will settle a total of NOK 190,3 million on June 10 to composers, lyricists and music publishers in Norway and abroad. The NCB settlement includes, for the first time, settlement from the new mechanical licensing company The MLC.

Of the total amount of NOK 190,3 million that is now being settled, NOK 62,6 million goes to TONO's members, NOK 124 million goes to rights holders abroad and NOK 3,7 million is reserved for currently unidentified rights holders and musical works, currently unannounced musical works, non-members, and disputed rights. 

First NCB settlement from The MLC

NCB, which manages mechanical rights (primarily physical media and synchronization) on behalf of TONO, has entered into an agreement with The Mechanical Licensing Committee ("The MLC") in the US, which from 1 January 2021 collects remuneration for mechanical online use in the US directly from the US audio providers (audio DSPs) on behalf of the NCB. NCB's June settlement, which is paid to TONO members together with the TONO settlement, includes for the first time mechanical online use in the US for the period January 2021 through January 2022 from The MLC. NCB's June settlement also includes mechanical royalties collected from YouTube in the US that have not already been collected directly by a publisher in the US up to Q4 2021. NCB normally pays royalties to TONO members twice a year, in June and in December.

Direct licensing accelerates online revenue from abroad

TONO, Koda (Denmark) and Teosto (Finland) established the licensing unit a few years ago Polaris HUB. Here, TONO directly licenses our repertoire to international film and music streaming services for a wide range of countries and territories. This means that TONO now receives foreign revenues both from sister societies in other countries and directly via Polaris HUB. As you will see in the overview further down in this document, TONO this time settles NOK 35,9 million in the online area. This income comes both from streaming in Norway, but not least also from abroad. The licensing through Polaris Hub means that TONO has direct control over the use of our members' music abroad, and allows us to pay you money for streaming your music faster.

The international settlement is the largest settlement area for TONO members in the June settlement in 2022. This income from abroad comes because TONO has entered into reciprocal agreements with companies like us all over the world. When TONO members' music is played on the radio, at concerts, in the cinema and so on in other countries, our sister societies send settlements to TONO for this. Similarly, we also settle money to the sister societies when their music is used in Norway. The online area also contains income that comes from the use of TONO members' music abroad as TONO directly licenses our repertoire to digital services through Polaris HUB.

On the member portal My TONO As a TONO member, you can view the balance and all movements in your member account at any time. You can also search for settlement data for individual plants across periods and categories with details about the individual transfers. Settlement documents showing the number of transfers per channel and area for the individual settlement runs are available for download.
