TONO will pay NOK 127,2 million to authors and music publishers at home and abroad in the fourth ordinary quarterly settlement of the year. NOK 58,8 million of this will go to TONO's members.
/ 09/12/2020 / Kristian DugstadTONO settles payments to composers, lyricists and their music publishers four times a year. The December settlement differs from the other settlements in that this is when TONO settles premiere performances.
– TONO's income in 2020 is characterized by the effects of Covid-19, especially within the concert area. The December settlement is nevertheless quite unaffected by this because the money we settle mainly comes from areas other than the concert area. We settle a total of NOK 127,2 million. Of this, NOK 58,8 million goes to TONO's members, while we send NOK 65,5 million to authors and music publishers abroad, says TONO CEO, Cato Strøm.
As usual, funds are also set aside for currently unidentified rights holders and musical works, unannounced musical works, non-members and disputed rights. This time, this is 2,9 million kroner.
Within radio area will be settled for the use of music in the second quarter of 2020. Specifically, this concerns the playback of music on 15 NRK channels, 9 Bauer media channels, and 9 channels under P4. A total of NOK 14,4 million will be settled from the use of music on radio. It will not be settled from the local radio area until next year. This is because local radio stations have been hit hard by Covid-19, and that TONO has granted a payment deferral in this context.
From Television broadcasting TONO is billing for the use of music in the second quarter of 2020 from 5 NRK channels, 7 TV2 channels and TV Norge. We also bill for playback of music on NRK's web player and TV2 Sumo in the first quarter of 2020. Visjon Norge also uses music, and from here we bill for performances in their broadcasts in 2019.
In 2018, TONO won a court case against Riks-TV that had been ongoing for ten years. We are settling parts of the settlement now in December within the area we call Television distribution. This area concerns TV broadcasts where distributors other than the channels themselves offer the channels to the public. The national TV settlement applies to performances on Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Fem, Max and Vox for the period 2008-2018. We also settle money as normal from the channels Fem, Max and Vox for performed music in the fourth quarter of 2019. From the areas of TV broadcasting and TV distribution, we settle a total of NOK 39,5 million.

It is the autumn settlement that is TONO's big concert billing. However, we also settle money for certain stage performances in the other three settlements. This can be, for example, revues and theater. This time it mainly concerns subsequent settlements for concerts, that is, concerts that for various reasons were not included by the deadline for the concert settlement earlier this fall, a total of 9,6 million kroner.
The music streaming services must have agreements with TONO, and this time we will charge money for plays of the music TONO manages on Spotify in June 2020, YouTube in the second quarter of 2020 and iTunes in the first quarter of 2020.
As is well known, there is music in films, and TONO therefore also has agreements with Video on demandservicesThis time, the settlement in this area concerns Netflix and Viaplay in the first quarter of 2020, Altibox in the second quarter of 2020, Google Play VOD in the first half of 2020, SF Anytime for the fourth quarter of 2019 and the first quarter of 2020, SF Kids for the years 2017-2019, Microsoft Moves & TV for the entire year 2019 and Norgesfilm for the years 2018 and 2019. For the areas of music and film streaming, we are settling NOK 22,1 million.
Have you had premieres of your music in Norway in 2019 on radio, TV, concert or cinema you can expect to be paid now. In this area we are paying NOK 13,9 million. For the use of TONO members' music in abroad we settle 15,6 million kroner. From sales of CDs, DVDs and other physical formats and synchronization into various types of film productions, our subsidiary in Copenhagen NCB settles a total of NOK 11,8 million through TONO. In addition, routine post-clearance settlements for previous periods (maximum 3 years back) in the broadcasting area, concert area, cinema, etc. as well as corrections.
As mentioned, a total of NOK 127,2 million is being settled. Below you can see how the settlement is distributed across different reporting areas, how much we have settled in total in each area and what proportion of this is settled to TONO's members.

About TONO:
TONO was founded in 1928 and is a non-profit cooperative owned and managed by authors (composers and lyricists) and music publishers, and on their behalf manages the economic copyrights in the music they have created. TONO grants permission for the use of protected music, for example on radio, TV, the internet, concerts and cinemas for a fee, and transfers its financial results each year to the rights holders in music that has been played publicly. TONO has 35,000 members, but also works for approximately three million authors and music publishers from around the world. TONO's social role is twofold, on the one hand collecting and simplifying the licensing of protected music and on the other hand providing music creators with an economic basis for creating new musical works. In 2019, TONO had a turnover of kr 771 millions.
