TONO pays out NOK 190 million:

/ 08/12/2023 / Willy MartinsenCollective management of copyright creates benefits for both users of music and those who create it. Today, TONO is paying out money to composers, lyricists and music publishers in the fourth ordinary settlement of the year. It is the highest December payout ever.
– Of the 190,1 million kroner we are now paying out to music creators and music publishers at home and abroad, 97,4 million kroner goes to TONO's members, more than 20 million kroner more to members than in December 2022. It is very nice to be able to say that this is the largest December payment we have ever made, says Karl Vestli, CEO of TONO.
Music and film streaming services constitute the largest payout area for TONO members this time, with 44,7 million kroner. This includes music streaming in Norway, but also music streaming in a number of other countries as TONO has agreements with Spotify, Apple Music and so on for streaming in these countries.
The second largest area of payment to TONO members is the money we receive from sister societies in Denmark, Sweden, the UK, the USA, Japan and dozens of other countries for the use of our music in other countries. Here, the money comes from radio and TV performances, concerts, streaming, cinema and so on. 18,7 million kroner goes to our members in foreign settlements.
The third largest payout area for TONO members is for NCB's offline settlements, which include synchronization fees and physical releases (LP, CD, etc.). This time, 11,7 million is being paid out to our members for these so-called "mechanical rights", also called sound recording rights.
There are often slightly different areas that are included in each settlement, and with that as a small caveat, you can see a graphical representation of the payments over the last five years below. The red bars show the total payment amount (to TONO members + payments abroad), while the black bars show the payment only to TONO members.

As is known, a lot of foreign music is also used in Norway, and 90 million kroner, 47 percent of the payment, goes to music creators and music publishers in other countries. As always, TONO also sets aside a smaller amount for currently unidentified rights holders and musical works, currently unreported musical works, non-members and disputed rights, where money is set aside pending the resolution of these unresolved cases. This time, this amount is 2,7 million kroner.
Here you can see how the total settlement amount of NOK 190,127,274 is distributed across performance areas and how much goes to TONO's members, to the members of our foreign sister societies and how much is currently undeliverable in each area.

In the table below you can see how many people receive compensation in different categories and for different areas.

The payout date is set for December 8. If you are a TONO member who is receiving a payout today, you have received information about this by email today.
