The EU is currently working on a reform of European copyright legislation. “Your signature is now needed at www.makeinternetfair.eu so that the EU understands the importance of protecting music creators,” says Cato Strøm, CEO of TONO.
/ 02/08/2016 / codexThe EU is working on a review of copyright law in Europe. The work will dramatically affect the livelihoods of composers, songwriters and lyricists. Whether this will be positive or negative is still an open question.
– Can be affected
– This is a process that can be influenced, says TONO CEO Cato Strøm. – We therefore hope that TONO members will contribute their signatures to a petition in which the European management organisations ask the EU to solve one of the most important issues for music creators in Europe in 2016, namely “Transfer of value”.
The term "transfer of value" refers to the injustice in which platform services (for example, social media) earn enormous amounts of money from, among other things, advertising sales related to shared music content without, protected by existing EU legislation, having to share the revenue with TONO members and their colleagues in other European countries.
On the agenda, but more needs to be done
The European management organizations have ensured that "transfer of value" is on the agenda of the European Commission, but the battle is far from won. The letter sent to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker this summer has been noticed, but we must do more. We must make sure that the European Commission hears that the problem affects everyone who makes a living from creating intellectual works – composers and songwriters, lyricists, architects, directors and so on. That is why we are asking for your signature at www.makeinternetfair.eu.
"Make the internet fair"
"Transfer of value" is a very important issue for TONO and our other European sister societies both now in 2016, but also next year when the European Parliament and the Member States will be involved in the work on copyright legislation. We will need commitment then too, but until then we hope that you will help make your voice heard in Brussels by signing the petition at www.makeinternetfair.eu
