Radio and TV are important sources of income for many TONO members. But have you ever wondered what actually determines how much you get for being played on, for example, NRK P1 or TV 2? We have now published the minute values for 2024 – and here is the explanation of how they are calculated.

– Minute values are the value of one minute of music played on a given channel, explains Elin Heer, head of TONO's billing department.

The values vary from channel to channel, and are influenced by, among other things, the channel's listener or viewership numbers and how much music is used. For example, the minute value on NRK P1 in 2024 is 109,29 kroner, while NRK P3 is 14 kroner per minute.

Calculated in retrospect

TONO is paid by major players such as NRK, TV 2, P4 and Bauer Media in the form of an annual total sum – a so-called lump sum. This means that we cannot say in advance exactly how much a single minute of music on a channel is worth. Instead, TONO calculates this afterwards, when the entire annual basis is in place.

– We have to wait to calculate the minute values until we have finalised the entire year, says Heer. – That will happen in June of the following year. Only then will we know how much money we have received, how much music has been used on the various channels, and how many people have listened to or watched them. Then we can make a fair distribution.

The minute values are used, among other things, as a basis when TONO calculates how much you as a rights holder will be paid for performances on radio and TV. But it is not only the channel that determines the payment - the time and type of use also play a role.

If you want to see the minute values for 2024 – and compare them with previous years – you can find the overview by logging in to My TONO.

Please note that these per-minute values only apply to traditional TV and radio broadcasting in Norway. For broadcasters' online streaming services, payouts are calculated based on available usage data.
