With a TONO agreement, Russian revues, student revues and others can use virtually all the world's music with just one permission. At the same time, they can be confident that the money they pay TONO will be used to generate income for those who created the music.
All music is written by composers and lyricists. These are protected by copyright under the Norwegian Copyright Act. Some songs are written by one person, others by many. As an organizer, you who, for example, create a Russian revue, must in principle have permission from each of them to use the music – before you use it – regardless of whether the song is performed in its original form – or in an adapted form if you have received specific permission to do so from the composer or their music publisher.
This would have been a huge job if it hadn't been for TONO. Almost all the world's composers and lyricists are members of TONO or similar companies in our international network, and thus you get the performance licenses for all of them in one place – at TONO. You also only pay one invoice – to TONO, and then we make sure to pay the money to the composers and lyricists who have written the music you have used in the revue.
We also need reports from you on which songs you have performed, how many people listened and an overview of ticket revenues. This information allows us, among other things, to send the money to the right composers and lyricists around the world.
For most revues, the price per performance is two percent of gross ticket revenue.
