TONO has begun work in 2023 and 2024 to systematize and strengthen our efforts in the area of sustainability. Now, a new report shows that rights organizations like TONO can play a central role in driving the music industry in a more positive and sustainable direction.

Social challenges prioritized

– The report shows how rights organizations can help solve challenges, especially within diversity, equality and mental health in the music industry, which stand out as priority areas for companies like us. It also shows that music creators themselves want the organizations to take an active role in promoting sustainable solutions. It is an inspiration to continue working and strengthen the sustainability work we have begun, says CEO of TONO, Karl Vestli.

The company Nordic Sustainability, which specializes in sustainability, has prepared the report on behalf of the Nordic collective music rights organizations TONO, STIM (Sweden), KODA (Denmark), Teosto (Finland) and Stef (Iceland).

International cooperation

– The report is important to us because it clarifies how environmental considerations, social responsibility and good governance can be integrated into the activities of rights organizations, both in Norway, the Nordic countries and the rest of the world. It provides a clearer direction for us at TONO, but it definitely also has value for rights companies in other parts of the world, as the challenges in the area of sustainability are largely international, says Vestli.

The report states that close collaboration across the music industry is necessary to find lasting solutions to sustainability challenges, and the rights organizations' well-established international collaboration can be central to creating positive change internationally within the music industry.

Input from the industry

The report was developed with extensive input from key industry stakeholders, including members, customers and partners of the organizations. A detailed survey was conducted to gather members’ perspectives on key ESG topics, in addition to 10 in-depth interviews with industry stakeholders.
