2013 was another record year for TONO, the management organization for Norwegian composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. Turnover ended at NOK 469 million, which corresponds to an increase of 7,48 percent from 2012. The result after deduction of costs, which constitutes TONO's distribution sum, was NOK 399 million, which corresponds to an increase of 7,74 percent.
– We are happy and proud to be able to present an annual result that shows a turnover approaching half a billion. This means that the repertoire TONO manages on behalf of composers, lyricists and music publishers is sought after and valued, and that we manage to manage our social responsibility as a facilitator for the public use of music by collecting and paying the correct remuneration for its use, says TONO CEO, Cato Strøm.
Biggest growth online
The strongest growth area is the Internet. TONO's online revenues increased by 47 percent from 2012 to 2013: From 50,4 million NOK to 74 million NOK. In comparison, TONO's online revenues in 2008 were 822,000 NOK. The agreements with Spotify and WiMP in particular provide the largest revenues, but there is also good growth in newer services in the market, such as "video on demand" services, with Netflix being the largest. TONO's concert revenues constituted the second largest growing market area for TONO in 2013, with a growth of 23 percent. There are several reasons for this growth, including a good summer with well-attended festivals. Mega concerts with major international stars, such as Justin Bieber, also provided large revenues.
More from abroad
In total, revenues of 30.2 million NOK were recorded from TONO's foreign sister societies in 2013, up from 27,9 million NOK the previous year. Due to formal requirements from tax authorities in some countries, the revenue stream may vary. The largest sum – 7,1 million NOK – came from Danish KODA, while 6,4 million NOK came from Swedish STIM and 3,6 million NOK from German GEMA.
During the calendar year 2013, TONO settled 130.5 million NOK to Norwegian licensees, while 167.3 million NOK was settled to licensees belonging to TONO's sister societies in other countries.
2013 also marked another pleasant record. Never before has TONO entered into so many new management contracts: A total of 1552 contracts were signed during the year, of which 5 were with music publishers.

About TONO:
TONO is a non-profit cooperative, founded in 1928, owned and managed by its members: composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers. TONO manages performance rights for musical works in Norway and collects remuneration for their public performance. TONO currently represents approximately 25,000 Norwegian composers, lyricists and music publishers. Through mutual representation agreements with similar companies in other countries, TONO practically manages the entire world repertoire. As a non-profit enterprise, TONO's results are transferred to the rights holders in performed works. TONO thus facilitates the use of music in society, while at the same time providing TONO's members with a basis for constantly creating new musical works.
