YouTube reporting solution in place

In February, Google launched a Norwegian YouTube service after signing an agreement with TONO. Since then, we have been working to agree on a reporting solution so that we can start collecting fees for the use of TONO repertoire. We are happy to announce that we have finally achieved this goal.

It would take over six months of negotiations on data exchange and technical adjustments from the time the agreement was signed in February until remuneration for the use of TONO repertoire on YouTube begins to be generated.

– It has been an ongoing negotiation that has lasted several years, and we are now happy that we have finally reached a conclusion with all parts of the agreement. The solution will come into effect from November 1, says Inger Elise Mey, Department Director for Online Media at TONO.

The income of the rights holders will come from advertising and advertisements placed on selected content on YouTube's service. This income will then form the basis for remuneration to rights holders that is settled via TONO/NCB. There will be no fixed price or settlement amount per YouTube view, as this can vary greatly depending on both advertising revenue and traffic. In other words: If you have a music video that YouTube chooses to place advertising around, you will earn money if the video is viewed. The more the video is viewed, the more advertising money YouTube receives - which can then be settled with the rights holders. It is very pleasing that the reporting solution is now in place, so that TONO can start invoicing YouTube for the use of the TONO repertoire. It is still important to bring a dose of sobriety. - TONO was the first in the Nordics with an agreement regarding YouTube, and we are pleased that all the details are now in place. It is important that the TONO repertoire is licensed so that the rights holders receive income, and the use is legal. Video sharing services such as YouTube today appear to be good platforms in a bigger picture, where participation in many different types of channels, both video sharing platforms, streaming, download services such as iTunes, record stores and so on, collectively will be able to provide good income for many of our members, says Mey.
