If you want to receive concert billing from TONO this fall, you must register both the songs and the concerts with us by February 1st.
/ 17/01/2018 / Willy MartinsenWithout information about songs and concert performances, there is not much we at TONO can do for you. In order to be able to give you a concert invoice for the fall, we must have information by February 1 about all the songs you have written that have been performed in concert, and the times you or others have performed them.
Strictly speaking, it is the organizers' responsibility to report concerts to us, and although some do, it is very useful for us to receive concert reports from the members themselves. Firstly, we catch some concerts we might otherwise have missed, and secondly, your report will allow us to quality check the organizers' reports.
Register songs quickly – once
As soon as the work is written, you should register it in TONO.
– We receive quite a few concert reports with works we cannot find in our databases. This is typically because the member has not registered it in TONO yet. In that case, we have to enter it as an unannounced work while waiting for a registration to come in, says Hege Dreyer Harstad at TONO's member service.
And what does this mean for you who have written this unregistered work? Well, first of all, we have to set aside funds for settlement on works we do not yet know who has written, and for you it means in concrete terms that you will not receive settlement until you have registered the work.
It is also good to be aware that different management companies have slightly different practices. Two examples are the German GEMA and the English PRS which operate with a one-year deadline for concert reports. If they have not received a report for a concert within one year of the performance, it may be difficult for us to get money from them..
Double check on My TONO
Harstad has the following request to TONO members who will be reporting a concert:
– Register the work in TONO as soon as it is written. And when you are going to submit a concert report, please check on My TONO whether you have registered it, she says.
This is not least important so that you do not register the same work twice. Because then it quickly becomes a bit of a hassle. Works registered with TONO are also included in international reference works for TONO's sister societies, and on a global basis such double, triple and so on registrations of works lead to enormous amounts of errors that must be continuously cleaned up.
Another thing you should be aware of is that if you have written a song together with a songwriter from another management company, for example the Swedish STIM, and this other songwriter has registered the work with their company, and at the same time added you as a co-songwriter, the song in question will be available for your approval on My TONOTherefore, check this before registering such a co-written song as a new work in TONO.
Not just for concerts
It may not be necessary to say, but still: Registering songs early and correctly is also important for you to be able to receive TONO remuneration from radio play, streaming, etc. We repeat the rule of thumb: Register new songs as soon as they are finished.
