Press release: Here are this year's EDVARD nominees

(Oslo, July 2, 2020) TONO annually awards the EDVARD Prize to honor some of our foremost composers and lyricists and to increase awareness of newly written Norwegian music. In 2020, the prize is awarded in five categories, and here are this year's nominees.

TONO has been awarding the EDVARD Prize since 1998 to composers and lyricists who have distinguished themselves by creating musical works of particularly high artistic quality. And although TONO actually works to manage the economic aspects of the copyright of 34,000 TONO members (authors and music publishers), and approximately 3 million of their colleagues from the rest of the world, the EDVARD Prize is important to the company:

– If there is something that characterizes everything TONO does, it is the insistence that music is valuable. This also characterizes our EDVARD award, which for more than twenty years has established itself as one of the country's truly important music awards. This year's nominees are all outstanding representatives of TONO's entire membership, and we hope that with this year's nominations we can help open Norwegians' eyes and ears to newly written Norwegian music, says Willy Martinsen, Head of Communications at TONO.

The winners in the five categories will be announced at various times throughout the fall.

About the EDVARD Prize
The EDVARD Prize is named after Edvard Grieg, and is a prize that TONO has awarded annually since 1998. The prize is awarded to authors who have created musical works and lyrics of high artistic quality. With the prize, TONO wants to increase awareness of Norwegian composers and lyricists, and to increase Norwegians' understanding of, and knowledge of, newly written Norwegian music. The winner's music or lyrics must have been premiered or published in the previous year, but emphasis is also placed on the author's other production. The prize consists of kr 50,000,-, as well as a trophy and a diploma designed by Magne Furuholmen. About TONO
TONO is owned and managed by authors (composers and lyricists) and music publishers, and manages on their behalf the economic copyrights in the music they have created. TONO grants permission for the use of protected music, for example on radio, TV, the internet, concerts and cinemas for a fee, and transfers its financial results each year to the rights holders in music that has been played publicly. TONO has 34,000 members, but also works for approximately three million authors and music publishers from the rest of the world. TONO's social role is twofold, on the one hand collecting and simplifying the licensing of protected music and on the other hand providing music creators with an economic basis for creating new musical works. TONO's turnover in 2019 was kr 771 millions.
