Podcast: Musical Direction

A glorified technician or musical director – What is the role of the music producer in 2020?

 / 15/01/2020 /

A music producer can be so many things today. Someone who writes and composes music, a studio technician, and a project manager with artistic overview and vision.

In this year's first episode of the TONO podcast Lage Musikk, producer veterans Mike Hartung and Erlend Mokkelbost are guests.

It's completely uninteresting to me to create something that is identical to previous releases.

Hartung is part of the Propeller Music Division, and among other things has produced music with Highasakite, Odd Nordstoga, Anne Grete Preus and Satyricon. Mokkelbost's production CV includes artists such as Jonas Alaska, No. 4, Silja Sol and the Honningbarna.

Artistic vision, plugins, and politics are the themes of the episode, which is available now.

Overview and vision

In conversation with Torgny Amdam, they discuss the role of the producer in an age where everyone has access to recording tools. Are producers becoming redundant or just becoming more and more important?

– As a producer, you envision the direction of a project, an identity, which may also break with what the artist has done before. It is completely uninteresting to me to create something that is identical to previous releases, says Mokkelbost.
