What makes a mix good? And how does one of Norway's leading mixers work? Listen to Mike Hartung in a new episode of TONO's podcast Musikkskaperne.
/ 28/08/2025 / Kristian DugstadA good recording depends on a good mix. But what does that really mean – and how do you achieve it? In this episode of The Music Makers Kristian Dugstad talks to mixing engineer Mike Hartung from Propeller Music Division in Oslo.
Hartung is originally from Los Angeles, but has lived in Norway since 1995. He started making music at the age of ten, built his own studio as a teenager and worked for many years as a technician and mixer in L.A. Since moving to Oslo, he has been a central figure in the Norwegian music industry, credited with hundreds of releases – including 28 Spellemann-winning projects – and has sold millions of physical records and generated billions of digital streams.
In the episode, Hartung shares his thoughts on what is the essence of a good mix, what mistakes music creators most often make, and why not “everyone” who has a sound card and a music program is actually a mixer.
