Songwriter, lyricist and artist, Philip Emilio, moved more times in Oslo during his childhood than most people do in their entire lives. How has that influenced the music of the NORA artist?
/ 23/02/2021 / Kristian DugstadPhilip Emilios released his album VIII in 2017 and followed it up with IRIS in 2019. The latter is an album with an original approach, namely to let each song be reflected in a conversation with a selected guest. A kind of verbal shadow side of the album if you will, which embroiders the themes that the songs themselves address. What did Emilio learn from this, and what does it actually do to the album IRIS?
In this episode we get up close and personal with the NORA-signed Oslo boy, songwriter, lyricist, singer and artist.
With a background from both Oslo city center, Oslo west and Oslo east, and with a mother with roots in the Philippines and a father from Chile, Emilio has a rich and original background experience from which to write his melancholic music.
– Bygdøy, Vika, St. Haugen … I have lived in Sinsen for a long time, Tøyen, Vålerenga, Etterstad and Jordal. You learn social skills along the way. When you come to a new place, you gradually get used to how people react to new people. You learn techniques to deal with it.
In conversation with Torgny Amdam, Emilio opens up about everything from his upbringing to the studio process, the transition between rap and RnB, Norwegian and English, the musical collaboration with producer Axxe (Aksel Carlson), and how to turn personal experiences into lyrics and melodies.
Together with host Torgny Amdam, a number of approaches to making music are discussed, and feel free to listen to the song VIII before or after the episode!
