Who can apply?
Applicants should normally have had an average TONO settlement in the previous three years of at least kr 5,000 per year.

What can I apply for a scholarship for?
TONO's purpose is, among other things, to safeguard musical diversity and to work towards the creation of new musical works. The TONO grant is intended to stimulate the creation of new musical works by composers, songwriters and lyricists. The purposes for which it is normally applied for are work, studies, projects and other costs directly related to the creative activity, and It must be clear from the application that the purpose contributes to the creation of new musical worksStudies/courses can be supported if it is clear from the application that this is important for carrying out or completing a specific piece of work.

Since the scholarship scheme is intended for creative activities, no scholarship will be awarded if the application is primarily about an executive project.

Support will not be provided for applications that primarily include touring, travel, promotion, marketing and equipment (instruments, laptop, etc.). If recording costs are included in the application, it is important that there is a good justification for why the recording is a crucial part of the process of creating works. One cannot therefore apply for a grant to cover studio recording of already composed works.

Limitations
You can only apply for one scholarship. A scholarship cannot be awarded to the same applicant for more than three consecutive years. If you receive a scholarship of NOK 120,000, you cannot be awarded a scholarship the following year.

The scholarship committee has the opportunity to consider multiple applications for joint consideration if applications are made for overlapping projects, even if they have not been applied for jointly.

What is emphasized in the assessment?
TONO's scholarship committee makes an overall assessment of the application based on the following factors:

  • Application design
The application itself – the project/purpose for which the application is being made – is the starting point for the assessment. It is therefore important that the applicant has a clearly formulated project, and that the application is otherwise clear and transparent. A budget is not required, although we see that some applicants include this in the project description.
  • The applicant's creative activity – production and publications
The applicant's current and previous creative activity is, among other things, an expression of the person's ability to implement. It builds trust if you can point to previous good, creative projects. In the application form, you are therefore asked to create an overview of ongoing and previous works/releases/productions/performances over the past three years that are relevant to the application. This overview also highlights creative activities that have not necessarily generated commercial success.
  • Earnings in TONO
Copyright royalties received through TONO can be said to be an expression of that part of the applicant's creative activity that has yielded commercial results. The committee has the applicants' income for the last three years available for the assessment. This information is taken from TONO's membership register and should not be provided by the applicant.

How much can you get in scholarship?
Scholarships are awarded at three main levels:
– 30,000 kroner
– 30,000 kroner
– 30,000 kroner

The scholarship committee is nevertheless free to grant scholarship amounts other than the main amounts, for example in cases where the application projects are wholly or partly the same for several applicants.

The committee decides the scholarship level based on the design of the application against the criteria mentioned above. You do not therefore need to state how much you specifically want in scholarship.

The number of scholarships at each of the main levels varies from year to year.

Scholarship Committee

Applications are processed by a single, joint scholarship committee, regardless of musical genre. The committee consists of seven members elected by TONO's annual meeting. Please be careful when filling out the application, remember that the scholarship committee will review a large number of applications. In order to limit the scope of applications, a limit has been placed on the number of characters in the various fields in the online form. It is therefore important that you prioritize including the information you believe is most important when processing your application.

Appeals
The scholarship committee's decision may be appealed to the TONO board within three weeks of notification of the decision to the applicant. The right to appeal only applies to the case processing, not the committee's discretion.
