Music in revue

In town and country, both professionals and amateurs are constantly inviting people to performances with humor and music. With the fall, for many people, preparations for next year's revues also come. With a TONO license, you can confidently face the premiere day.

It is difficult to imagine a revue without music. Behind every song performed on a revue stage are authors who, based on Section 2 of the Copyright Act, must give their permission for all public use of their music.

– Fortunately, revue organizers do not need to contact each individual author on their own. A TONO license is a permission on behalf of all the world's authors, both in Norway and abroad. It doesn't get much easier, says Laila Ruud at TONO.

One permission – All the world's music

School revues, student revues, amateur revues and professional revues – all must have a TONO agreement.

– The agreement must be in place before the premiere day. Contact us at TONO so we can give the green light and send you a permit, says Ruud.

After the performance period, it is important that TONO receives an overview of the music used in the performance. After the last performance, the TONO permit must be completed and returned, along with a report form with the original title of all musical works, as well as composers and lyricists.

– This way, the revue can be sure that the money ends up with those who composed the music and wrote the lyrics. Also remember that these should be credited in the program.

How much does it cost?

It is easy to calculate the price of the TONO license for your revue. The fee is two percent of gross ticket revenues above NOK 12,950 per performance. If the ticket revenues for a performance are lower than this, the price of the minimum fee for 2019 is NOK 259, with an annual index adjustment.

– If you sell 100 tickets for 200 kroner, the fee for that performance is two percent of 20,000, which is 400 kroner. TONO sees each individual performance separately.
