Do you run a store, hair salon, restaurant or other customer premises? With a TONO license you can play all kinds of music for your customers.
/ 11/01/2021 / Kristian DugstadA lot of work goes into creating a good atmosphere in a customer space. Whether you sell clothes, cut hair or serve food, you try to put your guests in a certain mood.
Music has a tremendous ability to create emotions in people, and the sound in the venue is of great importance. Therefore, it is both wise and profitable to have a conscious relationship with the music you play, just like with the interior, colors, lighting, smells and clothing.
TONO is a non-profit cooperative owned and managed by those who write music and lyrics, and their music publishers.
Anyone who creates a piece of music has, according to Section 3 of the Copyright Act, an exclusive right to make it available to the public. TONO grants this permission on behalf of those who have rights in the music, and pays money when their music is used.
This means that anyone who plays background music in a venue where customers and guests are present must have an agreement with TONO. Whether you use radio, CD, vinyl, TV or internet streaming as your sound source, the terms are the same.

1. Anyone can get a deal
There are no restrictions on what kind of businesses can play music. Whether you run a restaurant or a doctor's office, you can get an agreement with TONO. You can create the agreement by clicking here, or by contacting us by phone or email. We will help you calculate the price.
2. TONO & Gramo
If you use recorded music from a streaming service, radio, TV, CD or similar, you must have an agreement with both TONO and Gramo. TONO ensures that composers and lyricists get paid, while Gramo makes sure that everyone who owns and has made the recording gets their share.
3. Streaming service
It is not free to use your private Spotify account in public. When you subscribe to the streaming service, you accept that the service is intended for private use only. There are separate streaming services for businesses, such as Soundtrack Your Brand.

In 2019, TONO met with five client companies with a passionate relationship with their background music. MPH|Milesperhour, Espresso House, Høyer Woman, Lille Vinkel Sko and Doda dance shop at Byporten Shopping in Oslo believe background music is important.
– No music, it's a disaster. We might as well close the store, says Talia Sofie Gran at Lille Vinkel Sko.
