– There is more good news in the first TONO payment of the year. We are back at the same level for March payments as the record year 2020, when we paid out NOK 118,1 million to licensees at home and abroad. In addition, TONO members will receive the largest March payment ever this time, at NOK 63,6 million. That is more than NOK ten million more than the previous March record from 2020, says Karl Vestli, CEO of TONO.

Moreover, it is the first time in five years that the majority of the payment will go to TONO members. This time, licensees abroad will receive NOK 53,3 million.

Music streaming and abroad the biggest for TONO members

The largest income area for TONO members in this payout is music streaming, amounting to NOK 28,1 million. This includes the use of various streaming services in Norway, but also music streaming in a number of other countries as TONO has agreements with, among others, Spotify for streaming in these countries.

The second largest area of payment to members is the money we receive from similar companies, what we call sister societies, in a number of other countries. The money is paid to TONO for the use of members' music outside Norway.

Foreign income comes from radio and TV performances, concerts, streaming, cinema, etc. NOK 19,8 million goes from this area to TONO's members.

Payments distributed by area

Here you can see how the total settlement amount of NOK 118,018,427 is distributed across areas. You can also see how much goes to TONO members and to our foreign sister societies' members in each area.

TONO also sets aside a smaller amount for currently undistributable funds. This applies to, among other things, unidentified rights holders and musical works, not yet registered musical works, non-members and disputed rights. The money shown in this column is set aside until these cases are resolved. This time the amount is NOK 1 million.

A total of 26,867 TONO members are receiving payments today. Of these, 5058 are women and 20,944 are men. Money is also being paid to 490 members for whom we do not have information about gender. The distribution between women and men is 18,8 percent and 77,9 percent, respectively.

The figures are based on analysis of members' national identity numbers, where the ninth digit indicates gender.

In the table below you can see other key figures from the payout.

Development for March payout

There are often slightly different areas included in each payment, and with that as a small caveat, you can see a graphical representation of the payments over the last five years below.

The red bars show the payout to TONO members only, the blue bars show the payout to foreign sister societies. You can see the total under each bar.

Please note that the red and blue bars combined do not add up to the total amount for each payment. This is due to the amount set aside to cover funds that are currently undistributable, as discussed above.

The payment date is set for March 15. If you are a TONO member who is receiving a payment today, you have received information about this by email today. By logging in to My TONO, you will get a full overview of your settlement. Questions can be directed to member service by phone at 22 05 72 80 or medlem@tono.no. The text was updated on March 22 when the information about billing from Apple Music and YouTube under the heading "Music Streaming" was changed.
