Peter Nordberg has released a number of albums and EPs under his own name, and three gold and platinum-selling albums with former Vamp vocalist Vidar Johnsen. The Swedish artist and songwriter is constantly on tour in Norway, and will also play at the festival "Viser ved kanalen" in Lunde in Telemark, which will be held on June 22 and 23. This time he will also lead a songwriter workshop organized in collaboration with the festival.
The songwriting workshop, which will take place at Strengen brygge in Lunde on June 21, will be a mix of course and camp. Participants will share and gain tools that can be used in their creative work, new songs will be written in the form of "co-writes", and networks will be built between the participants that can lead to future collaborations. Peter Nordberg elaborates (and is quoted, as he wishes, in his native language):
- It is perhaps not that common with co-writes in the show genre, although there are certainly many examples of it actually happening. Viser Ved Kanalen has a fairly modern and broad view of what the genre of visor encompasses, which you can clearly see when you look at the festival's programme. That view is also embraced by the workshop. The workshop may have "show" as an epithet, but the songs produced will still have all the colors of the rainbow in terms of genre and expression. It will be very exciting to lead the participants during an intensive day where creativity is at the center.
– What kind of hopes and expectations do you have for the workshop?
- I myself have participated in a similar workshop, it was organized by SKAP, the Swedish equivalent of NOPA, and my hope is that all participants come home with the same feeling as I did that time. A feeling of having been strengthened in one's creation and inspired to new creation. That new contacts are made and that the workshop leads to new musical collaborations that probably wouldn't have happened otherwise.
– What characterizes a truly good singer?
- For me, it becomes difficult to distinguish visa and pop. A good song is a good song. Several of the songs I wrote together with Vidar Johnsen might be seen as pop, they were played quite a bit on the radio and might sound poppy. But at the same time they can be performed with a guitar and vocals. And that's often the case, I think. It is not possible to isolate the Nordic pop music from the Nordic troubadour tradition, folk music and other influences that we creators have. I think that a good visa has a text that tells a story, with a popular and middle-class, preferably topical theme with a melody and a musical expression that underlines and strengthens the story. A good visa speaks to you, and you can feel it, concludes Nordberg, who is also one of our growing number of foreign TONO members.
There are still a few places left at the workshop, so if you are interested you can call Viser ved Kanalen on 997 43 181 or by sending an email to post@kanalbaatene.no.
