Christmas greetings from the TONO CEO 2025
TONO is a community with a great diversity of expressions, interests and opinions. Managing this in a fair and balanced way is demanding, but it is also our strength, and the very core of collective management. Karl Vestli sums up the year and looks forward to 2026.
/ 19/12/2025 / Kristian DugstadDear members and partners,
We are approaching the end of the music year 2025. A lot is happening in our industry, and the past 12 months have been no exception.
From 2026, TONO will transition to new online licensing through ICE Core. The company already handles this area for several sister societies, including British PRS, German GEMA, American BMI and Swedish STIM. The transition will ensure efficient and competitive management of rights related to music streaming and social media in the years to come.
After three years of extensive work on new systems and technical solutions, this is now starting to yield concrete results. In December, we completed the last complete settlement in the old system. From 2026, payments will go through a new system. The change is not very visible to members, but it facilitates greater efficiency, better precision and greater insight into the settlements.
What you will soon see with your own eyes, however, is the new Mitt TONO. In recent months, user panels consisting of music creators and publisher members have given us valuable feedback in the work on the new member portal. From January, members will have continuous access to a new solution for work registration. This is the first part of a larger whole that will be launched during 2026 and 2027.
In February, TONO moved into the TONO house in Kongens gate 12. For the past year, the administration has been working in what has been practically a construction site, but now the project is nearing completion. From the spring of 2026, the house will be fully operational, with, among other things, music studios, event facilities, meeting rooms and workplaces for members to use. It is their house.
While TONO's revenues and settlements are at a historically high level, we have also faced criticism in 2025. This has been particularly related to the introduction of a new settlement model. This work has been necessary and important, but we must acknowledge that we have not been good enough at explaining the changes clearly enough along the way.
Some believe we have spent too long on this process, others believe we are acting too quickly. The result can then quickly be uncertainty, and even speculation, related to our work and our priorities. The trust we manage imposes on us a responsibility to inform better, explain more thoroughly and create security. We take that responsibility seriously. We will therefore place even greater emphasis on clear and understandable communication in the future.
TONO is a community of 45,000 members, with a great diversity of expressions, interests and opinions. Managing this community in a fair and balanced way is demanding, but it is also our strength, and the very core of collective management. We will take that with us into 2026, as we continue to work for you and your rights.
We wish you a peaceful holiday and a happy new year.
Karl Vestli
CEO, TONO
