Ørjan Matre has been nominated for the TONO composer award category for Spellemann, and says it inspires further work.

Ørjan Matre won the EDVARD Prize in 2012. Now he has been nominated for the TONO composer prize category at Spellemann.

– I am of course very happy to be nominated for the Tono Composer's Prize in connection with this year's Spelleman Award. In a genre-independent category, there are many records that are released during the course of a year, and many composers who could have been nominated. Naturally, the nominees represent a broad spectrum of what is produced in Norway today. Being one of those nominated is a great honor, and something that inspires further work.

– Tell us a little about the work you are nominated for!

– On the album that the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra with conductor Rolf Gupta has released are two of my works, a violin concerto with Peter Herresthal as violin soloist and a purely orchestral work, preSage. I have worked closely with several orchestras over the past ten years, and these works in many ways summarize some of the expression I have worked towards. Both have been performed several times in concert, but going into the studio and making a recording is a very different process, especially for a composer who is mostly used to sitting all alone in front of the sheet music. However, the orchestra, conductor and soloist made the job very easy for me, I could mostly sit and listen and smile, and they should have a large part of the credit for the nomination, he says.
