TONO's annual and transparency report provides insight into the copyright economy for music in Norway for 2025. Gross revenue ended at NOK 1,1 billion, up 9,1 percent from 2024, and a profit to be distributed of NOK 928,7 million. Profit to be distributed refers to amounts that are distributed to rights holders over several years.
During 2025, TONO paid out NOK 714,8 million in settlements to Norwegian and foreign songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers, down 3,6 percent from NOK 741,6 million in 2024. Of the amount paid out, NOK 379,8 million, up from NOK 366,9 in 2024, went to foreign music creators and publishers. NOK 335 million was paid to TONO members, down from NOK 374,8 million the previous year.
– The payments to TONO members in 2025 were the second highest ever, only beaten by the payments in 2024. The decrease from 2024 was still noticeable for many of our members. It is primarily due to the introduction of a new settlement model that even more directly reflects what kind of music Norwegians actually listen to, so that more money goes abroad, and that some funds from the background music area were not paid out in 2025, but will benefit the rights holders in 2026, says TONO CEO Karl Vestli.
