“Artists' rights will be strengthened with a simpler and more modern copyright law,” the Ministry of Culture writes in a press release when the proposal for a new copyright law has now been sent out for consultation. – We have been waiting for this, and are pleased that the proposal for a new copyright law is now available, says TONO CEO Cato Strøm.

It was yesterday, March 17, that the Government published its proposal for a new intellectual property law.

– The Copyright Act is our most important cultural law. Now it will be easier to use and better adapted to the world we live in, says Minister of Culture Linda Hofstad Helleland in the press release.

The press release states that it is a central principle of the Copyright Act that there should be a balance between the interests of copyright holders and consumers. The 2015 study on the artist economy showed, among other things, that technological developments have weakened the position of copyright holders. This is also something that TONO's CEO Cato Strøm has pointed out on a number of occasions in recent years, including in this reader's post on Ballade in June last year.

– We have been waiting for this proposal for a while, and are pleased that it is now available. We think the signals the government is sending look positive. TONO has long wanted a modernization of the Copyright Act, especially considering that technology, as we see it, has run away from copyright. It is high time for a rebalancing of copyright that gives creators more real ownership of their own intellectual property, especially in a digital age, says TONO CEO, Cato Strøm.

The proposal for a new law is extensive and more than 400 pages long. TONO will respond to the consultation, which has a deadline of August 8, 2016.
