The European Parliament's JURI Committee voted yesterday on Article 13 of the new Copyright Directive, which states that providers of large user-generated platforms and services shall have a responsibility to ensure that the protected artistic and creative content in the services is cleared. - We are grateful and happy that the vote went in favor of the rights holders, says TONO CEO, Cato Strøm.

European artist groups, including music creators, have been fighting for years for the EU to address the problem of their art generating huge revenues for user-generated services without a fair and equitable share of the revenue going back to them. Now it seems that artists are finally being heard.

The European Parliament's JURI Committee voted yesterday on Article 13, and a clear majority in the committee voted in favor of the artists. This means that services such as Facebook and YouTube will now be obliged to comply with basic copyright principles. They will now be required to ensure that permission for use has been obtained from rights holders, including TONO, for the use of their music. This will in turn help create much-needed balance in the huge digital economy in this area. The services will have to pay TONO and other rights holders' organizations a fair and reasonable remuneration for the use of protected music on their services.

– The vote was very positive for the copyright holders, who were successful in almost everything. There are still some negotiations to be done, but we are now very close to a result. The JURI Committee's vote signals a positive development in the legislative work for the copyright holders. We have put a lot of work into this, and the work continues towards the final vote in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg on July 4 and 5, says Strøm.
