EDVARD to Sverre Indris Joner

The prize of 40.000 kroner as well as a trophy and diploma was presented by Ingrid Kindem in connection with the Oslo World Music Festival. The prize was presented to Joner before he took the stage with his band Electrocutango.

Joner receives the award for the music for 'Tanghost', a stage play based on Henrik Ibsen's play Gjengangere. The play is directed by Per Olav Sørensen and choreographed by Pablo Veron.

The jury's statement about the winning work: 'In this performance, music is a supporting element and an important dramaturgical partner to the text, movement and scenography. The musical starting point is a classic ballroom dance of folk origin – for most composers, a rather narrow framework. But the composer manages to vary the form in such a way that it constantly deepens the emotional content, constantly illuminates the material in new ways and constantly develops interestingly as music. And thus the original genre is also renewed. The composer shows impressive craftsmanship and great artistic understanding of the content of the piece. Through his participation, he makes an important contribution to releasing a bold idea.'

Sverre Indris Joner, born in Oslo, is a very versatile composer and pianist. He is a member of the three groups Descarga, Tango for 3 and Electrocutango. He has studied music at the universities of Oslo and Havana, Cuba.

The other nominees in this category were Helge Lien/Rolf Erik Nystrøm for the music for the TV documentary 'Prøysen' and Magnus Beite for the music for the short film 'Pappa'. The EDVARD Prize, named after Edvard Grieg, is a prize awarded by TONO to composers and songwriters for outstanding musical works, and during the autumn TONO will award a total of 5 EDVARD Prizes in different categories.
