15 songs, pieces of music and/or albums are now competing to become this year's winners of TONO's EDVARD composer award. The nominees will be announced today.
/ 21/06/2024 / Kristian Dugstad– It is now entirely possible to create music with artificial intelligence without having any knowledge of making music. We would therefore argue that it is more important than ever to honor human creativity. With the EDVARD nominations, we at TONO are highlighting 15 of the most well-written songs, works and lyrics from 2023 to increase attention to newly written Norwegian music and those who create it, says Willy Martinsen, who heads the communications work at TONO.
TONO has awarded the EDVARD Prize since 1998. It is awarded annually in five categories to composers, lyricists and songwriters who have distinguished themselves by having created music and lyrics of extremely high artistic quality.
The categories are Popular, Contemporary, Open Class, Text and Challenger. The music must have been published and premiered in the previous year. The EDVARD Prize is awarded to music creators and rights holders who are members of TONO.
The award consists of a trophy and a diploma, both designed by artist and composer colleague Magne Furuholmen, as well as an amount of kr 70 000.

The jury consists of composers, lyricists and music publishers:
Sten Ove Toft (Independent, jury leader), Agnes Hvizdalek (Norwegian Composers' Association), Alexander Austheim (NOPA), Andrew Smith (Music Publishers), Maria Stene Brendstrup (Music Publishers), Jan Erik Mikalsen (Norwegian Composers' Association), Johanne Flottorp (independent) and Thea Hjelmeland (NOPA).
The EDVARD Prize is named after Edvard Grieg, and is a prize that TONO has awarded annually since 1998. The prize is awarded to authors who have created musical works and lyrics of high artistic quality. With the prize, TONO wants to increase attention to Norwegian composers and lyricists, and to increase Norwegians' understanding of, and knowledge of, newly written Norwegian music.
The prize winner's music or lyrics must have been premiered or published in the previous year, but emphasis is also placed on the author's other production. The prize consists of kr 50,000,-, as well as a trophy and a diploma designed by Magne Furuholmen.
Previous winners include Maja Ratkje, Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid, Chirag Rashmikant Patel, Egil Monn-Iversen, Fay Wildhagen, Nils Henrik Asheim, Erik Bye, Susanne Sundfør, Ørjan Matre, Lars Vaular, Marit Larsen, Ole Paus, Susanna Wallumrød and Sigrid Raabe.
