Each year, TONO awards the EDVARD Prize to honor some of our foremost composers and lyricists and to increase awareness of newly written Norwegian music. In 2022, the prize will be awarded in five categories, and here are this year's nominees.
/ 30/06/2022 / Kristian DugstadTONO has awarded the EDVARD Prize since 1998 to composers and lyricists who have distinguished themselves by creating musical works of particularly high artistic quality.
Although TONO works to manage the financial aspects of the copyright of its more than 38,000 members (authors and music publishers), and approximately 3 million of their colleagues from the rest of the world, the EDVARD Prize is important to the company:
– It is our impression that the EDVARD Prize has established itself as one of the country's important music prizes over more than 20 years. The nominees this year are all outstanding composers, lyricists and songwriters and great representatives of TONO's membership. We hope the nominations contribute to increased attention to newly written Norwegian music, says Willy Martinsen, Communications Director at TONO.
The winners in the five categories will be announced at various times throughout the fall.
The EDVARD Prize is awarded to composers who are members of TONO and who have distinguished themselves by creating new musical works of exceptionally high quality. The prize consists of a trophy and a diploma, both designed by artist and composer colleague Magne Furuholmen, as well as an amount of kr 50,000. Since the first award ceremony in 1998, well over 100 awards have been presented in various categories.
In cases where the music is released under a band or artist name, this is stated in parentheses after the nominees' names.

The jury consists of both authors and music publishers:
Torgny Amdam (NOPA, jury chair), Samsaya Sharma (NOPA), Martin Rane Bauck (Norwegian Composers' Association), Kristin Norderval (Norwegian Composers' Association), Sten Ove Toft (independent), Ole Børud (independent), Oda Svendsby (Musikkforleggerne) and Andrew Smith (Musikkforleggerne).
The EDVARD Prize is named after Edvard Grieg, and is a prize that TONO has awarded annually since 1998. The prize is awarded to authors who have created musical works and lyrics of high artistic quality. With the prize, TONO wants to increase attention to Norwegian composers and lyricists, and to increase Norwegians' understanding of, and knowledge of, newly written Norwegian music.
The prize winner's music or lyrics must have been premiered or published in the previous year, but emphasis is also placed on the author's other production. The prize consists of kr 50,000,-, as well as a trophy and a diploma designed by Magne Furuholmen.
