What would a pizza restaurant be without Italian mandolins? An Irish pub without flutes and fiddles? Can you imagine a nightclub without the pounding bass? Music helps create a mood wherever we go in society. It's there in the background, coloring everyday life.
/ 26/04/2019 / Kristian DugstadMusic is an inherent part of public space. We have it around us almost all the time. It can be the radio in the waiting room that makes us forget about the fear of the dentist. Hip hop at the shoe store can take us to a California beach promenade. A playlist of 90s hits at a French bistro can ruin the whole experience.
– All the music that is played in public – be it in restaurants, bars, hair salons, shopping malls or in telephone queues – we call TONO background music"Music is used everywhere all the time, and is an important element in many companies' overall expression," says Andreas Wille Paulsen in TONO's Marketing Department.

TONO's task is to collect payment on behalf of those who own the music, and distribute the money to the rights holders. Paulsen has daily contact with business people who use music in their everyday lives. Together with his working group in the Marketing Department, they ensure that this benefits the authors.
What TONO calls background music is all music that is played in public spaces, without being the star of the show. You go to the hair salon to get your hair cut, not to listen to music. The music that is played is still part of the overall experience.
– A lot of companies use music, to a large or small extent. No matter how little space the music takes up, those who created it should have paid. In Norway, it is TONO that ensures that the money comes through.
There are no restrictions on who can play music as part of their business. Research shows that a conscious relationship with music can contribute to value creation, including in shops and restaurants. However, it is mandatory to clarify the use of music with TONO before getting started.
– TONO has agreements with all kinds of businesses. Everything from those who play the radio in the cafeteria to restaurants that spend time and effort creating a holistic atmosphere. What you pay depends on several factors. For restaurants and nightclubs, we look at the number of seats and days in operation per year. In stores, it's a question of square meters.
To create an agreement and obtain a TONO license, you can use one of these online forms: Dining and accommodation or shop and customer premisesIf you are unsure what kind of agreement you need, TONO's marketing department is more than happy to explain. In addition to having an agreement with TONO, which represents those who have composed and written the music, companies must obtain permission from Gramo. This is the organization that safeguards the rights of those who create and own recordings of music.
– With an agreement with TONO and Gramo, you can safely play music in public, knowing that the rights of the authors are protected. Our two organizations also cooperate closely. We have joint inspectors who visit companies throughout Norway and ensure that the terms of the agreement are followed.
