CHURCH MUSIC // Jan Gunnar Hoff // Meditatus

01/04/2014

Jury's reasoning With a simple and breathtakingly beautiful theme, the listener is lured into a familiar musical landscape where one can safely close one's eyes and just let oneself be captivated. The work's function as applied music becomes a strength this time because the composer fulfills all its requirements and prerequisites with creativity and integrity. The traditionally strict form of the mass becomes […]

TRADITIONAL MUSIC // Jorun Marie Kvernberg // When you came

Jury's reasoning A naked, intimate, well-formed, new folk music work with something personal, bright and untouched about it. It is mixed with traditional material, but bold arrangements, bouncy melodies and non-traditional instrument combinations make one listen with fresh ears. The deviation towards Irish folk music and jazz also appears as a completely natural and homely spice in the performance.

CONTEMPORARY // Ragnhild Berstad // Recludo

Jury's reasoning A work with large, organic waves of intensity, composed of condensation/dilution of rhythmic activity, color shifts, instrumentation, and with microtonal melody and harmony lines. Good tension/balance between soloists and plenum, different placements in the room, microphoned sound and acoustic sound. A personal, solid and richly faceted work, with a strong, underlying dramatic power. Carefully coordinated image and […]

MUSIC FOR OTHER ARTS // Sverre Indris Joner // Tanghost

Jury's reasoning In this performance, music is a supporting element and an important dramaturgical partner to text, movement and scenography. The musical starting point is a classical ballroom dance of folk origin – for most composers a rather narrow framework. But the composer manages to vary the form in such a way that it constantly deepens the emotional content, constantly […]

POPULAR MUSIC // Martin Hagfors, Lars Horntveth and Martin Horntveth // Tolerate

Jury's reasoning Tolerate is the result of a collaboration between several key creators in Norwegian popular music. The lyrics have a serious and vulnerable undertone. The melody in the verse is unpredictable, the chorus is catchy and melancholic. The song grows with each listen and manages to take the listener on a journey where lyrics and melody complement and support each other. The arrangement […]
