Norway enjoys great recognition among international jazz enthusiasts. We have many strong composers and performers within the genre. Many listeners have probably looked at the album covers of these composers and performers and discovered a common thread: “Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo. Engineer: Jan Erik Kongshaug”. This can be read on more than 4000 albums. And the “Kongshaug sound” has become a term.

A musical work is intangible. It belongs to the world of ideas, emotions and creativity. With sound recording, an image is taken. Magic is to be created, and sound is to be conveyed and captured. For Jan Erik Kongshaug, sound recording is about more than microphone selection, compression, EQ and timbre. Musicians who have worked with him emphasize the calm. The security he creates. He makes musicians perform better.

TONO's Mediator Award is awarded to individuals or organizations that have made a special contribution to the dissemination of Norwegian music. Jan Erik Kongshaug's work as a sound engineer, as a producer, as a seal of quality and as a mediator is a unique contribution to, and for, Norwegian music.

It is a pleasure to be able to award TONO's Mediator Award 2019 to Jan Erik Kongshaug.
