TONO is a cooperative owned and managed by composers, lyricists and music publishers, and on their behalf manages the economic copyrights in the music they have created and own. TONO grants permission for the public performance of protected music on radio, TV, the internet, concerts and cinemas, etc., against payment, and transfers its financial results each year to the rights holders in music that has been played publicly.
TONO has more than 37,000 members, and also manages in Norwegian territory the rights of millions of authors and music publishers belonging to TONO's sister societies in other countries around the world.
The EU Directive on Collective Rights Management (2014/26/EU) was adopted in 2014 and was implemented in Norwegian law on 1 July 2021. According to the law, TONO is required to produce an annual transparency report. In practice, this requirement will cover TONO's activities from the 2022 financial year onwards. However, TONO has chosen to align the 2021 annual report closely with the requirements for the content of a transparency report.
It is TONO's wish that the annual and transparency report will provide deeper insight into and understanding of TONO's unique nature, operations, finances and governance - both among our members, sister societies, customers, the rest of the music industry and other interested parties.
