Good development for Online Media

TONO's Online Media department was expanded in 2015 to also include other media areas, including the broadcasting area, which is now an important part of the department's licensing area. Work on film streaming and licensing of VOD (Video on demand) has been central in 2015, and TONO sees good development in the income area here. Income for the online area has otherwise increased steadily since its inception in 1995, and in 2015 the department reached NOK 100 million for licensing music in digital media.

Record year for the marketing department

The department consists of 17 employees divided into four teams. Revenue from the concert area continued its positive development in 2015, and for the first time exceeded NOK 60 million. High activity in the concert market, combined with proactive and outreach work from TONO, as well as information campaigns, have contributed to the result. Revenue from mechanical background music also increased, which can be explained by sales and information campaigns aimed at a number of customer areas such as hotels, catering, shops, hairdressers and fitness centers. A restructuring of resources in the department has also increased efficiency. The department will carry out several sales and information campaigns aimed at the concert and event market in 2016.

Settlements to and from abroad

At the end of 2015, TONO had 70 reciprocal agreements with sister societies in other countries. Some of the agreements cover several countries, and in total they give TONO representation in more than a hundred countries and territories. The reciprocal agreements mean that the companies collect remuneration for public performances of each other's repertoires in their respective countries and territories, and settle the funds back to the various companies for further settlement to the rights holders in the performed works.

TONO got a new works database

In October 2015, TONO switched to the new works database ICE, after a multi-year and very extensive project. The transition effectively involves the "outsourcing" of an important IT function in TONO, and puts TONO in a good position to handle the existing and future requirements for the efficient administration of enormous amounts of data in a qualitatively very good way. ICE is owned by TONO's sister societies PRS for Music (England), GEMA (Germany) and STIM (Sweden), and has offices in Berlin. When TONO joined ICE, together with Danish KODA and Finnish Teosto in the autumn of 2015, more than 25 million musical works were stored in ICE.

NCB turned 100

When you become a member of TONO, you also become a member of NCB (Nordic Copyright Bureau), which on behalf of TONO licenses the mechanical rights for TONO, typically physical formats and synchronization. On December 7, 2015, it was 100 years since the Danish PJ Carvil established the company. NCB is today owned by the Nordic management companies. In 2012, NCB, in cooperation with TONO's British sister society PRS for Music, established the company NMP (Network of Music Partners), which provides "back office" services in the online area to, among others, the Nordic management organizations.

47,7 percent have heard of TONO

In January, TONO conducted an awareness survey among a representative sample of Norwegians over the age of 18. Here, 47,7 percent stated that they had heard of TONO. Awareness is lowest among those between the ages of 18 and 29, which is not unnatural considering that most of the general population who need to deal with TONO are those who, in a professional context, pay remuneration for performing music. Nevertheless, it shows the necessity of continuing the focus on information work towards the population.

TONO sponsored by:Larm and Spellemann

In 2015, TONO sponsored by:Larm and Spellemann to increase awareness and knowledge of TONO, both among creators and users of music. At by:Larm, TONO was behind a panel debate, several lectures, three TONO Sessions interviews and also organized the seminar "New Opportunities for Your Music" together with NOPA, NKF and Musikkforleggerne. Spellemann provided good public exposure in the form of, among other things, opening and closing posters in the TV broadcast. The sponsorships are part of TONO's external communication work, which also includes, among other things, media contact, production of editorial content in text and video, information campaigns for the corporate market, lectures and an active social media presence.
