Background music creates atmosphere, and for businesses and organizations that use it in public contexts, music provides a competitive advantage that would otherwise be missed. TONO manages the musical works of almost 30,000 members, as well as their colleagues (composers, lyricists and music publishers) in other countries, a total of more than 2,5 million authors.
Music license for 2017
These days we send out upwards of 10,000 invoices. The invoices are for music licenses for 2017. With a paid TONO license, all of these businesses can play all the world's music in their customer premises. TONO is the only company in Norway that can provide such a comprehensive license. The businesses that now receive TONO invoices are restaurants and nightspots, teams and associations, clubs, sports teams, accommodations such as hotels, guesthouses and campsites, industrial businesses, shops, clothing stores, shoe stores, department stores and shopping malls, hairdressers, massage studios, health, body and wellness businesses, fitness centers, larger chains, unions, umbrella organizations, political parties and event agencies.
The foundation
The background to TONO's activities is Section 2 of the Norwegian Copyright Act. When composers, lyricists and music publishers enter into a management agreement with TONO or our dozens of sister societies worldwide, these rights holders entrust their management companies with granting permission for use in the public domain on their behalf. The permission is granted against payment of the TONO fee. TONO's cost percentage in 2015 was 14,33%, the remainder was paid out to rights holders at home and abroad.
If you have received an invoice and have questions about it, please contact TONO's marketing department on 22 05 72 00 or marked@tono.no.
