TONO was established in 1928 by Norwegian composers, lyricists and music publishers. We are a cooperative, and are still owned and managed by the aforementioned copyright holders of musical works.

TONO manages the economic copyrights in the music of our more than 43,000 members and millions of their colleagues from the rest of the world.

We license the use of protected music that we manage – for example on radio, TV, the internet, concerts and cinemas for a fee, and each year we transfer our financial results to rights holders in music that has been played publicly.

TONO has a two-fold societal role in that, on the one hand, we collect and simplify the licensing of protected music for companies and organizations that want to use music, and on the other hand, we provide music creators with an economic basis for creating new musical works.

TONO's vision is to provide value to everyone who creates and uses music. In 2024, we helped thousands of Norwegian businesses and organizations clear music rights – and paid out 741,7 million kroner to songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers in Norway and abroad.
