Everyone who applied for the TONO scholarship and the Young Talents scholarship has today received a response via email to their applications. 590 of these have been informed that they will receive a TONO scholarship of NOK 25,000. 192 have been informed that they will receive a NOK 7500 Young Talents scholarship. The money will be paid out on Friday, May 21.

Only TONO scholarships of 25,000

As in 2020, the scholarship committee chose to award the TONO scholarship exclusively at the level of NOK 25,000, as opposed to the three levels of NOK 100,000, NOK 50,000 and NOK 25,000 that are normally used. For the Young Talents scholarship, scholarships were awarded only at the level of NOK 7500.

This is due to the Covid-19 situation, which has hit many TONO members hard. Through this approach, more people will receive support for creative activities, although in some cases the support is lower than it would normally have been.

In its assessment of the applications, the scholarship committee has based its assessment on the criteria described on TONO.no, and which were informed about in the scholarship announcement.

In recent years, there has been an opportunity to apply for grants on behalf of several people. This is most relevant when several authors have a creative collaboration, and every year some people take advantage of this opportunity. This year, 22 of the grants went to a group of recipients.

Three-week appeal deadline

The scholarship committee in 2021 consisted of Tove Kragset and Morten Lorentzen from NOPA, Anne Hytta and Jon Øivind Næss from NKF, Stine Osmo Lieng from Musikkforleggerne, as well as independents Kaja Gunnufsen and Ole Børud.

The scholarship committee's decision may be appealed to the TONO board within three weeks of notification of the decision to the applicant. The right to appeal only applies to the case processing, not the committee's discretion.

Cultural means

The TONO scholarship is funded by the cultural assets as described in §58 of TONO's statutes. It is stated that for each rights holder in TONO, deductions of up to 1/10 of the settlements shall be made before the distribution of the total net amount. The cultural funds are distributed 2/3 to "national music cultural purposes" through the group associations NOPA, the Norwegian Composers' Association and the Music Publishers - and the remaining 1/3 to scholarships.

The scholarship share is further divided into 1/8 to the Music Publishers' scholarships and 7/8 to the TONO scholarship. Read more about the cultural funds here..
