Streaming church services online isn't that complicated. Here are three rules to remember to ensure safe navigation in the waters of music rights.

Here we see that some congregations find rights clearance cumbersome. Other congregations, on the other hand, find it easier than it might seem to deal with TONO and music rights.

We at TONO are delighted by the great interest in live-streaming church services. We have encouraged this ourselves, among other things, by granting exemptions from TONO clearance in the initial phase of the corona crisis. We have good dialogue with Norwegian congregations that want an agreement or have questions beyond what they find in our rights guide, which has been on the front page of tono.no since March. We nevertheless take the media coverage of recent days as inspiration for initiating further information measures in the future.
We're already starting by repeating the very basics. Here we've summarized a three-step recipe for those of you who want to stream church services online.
Please contact TONO's Online media department before the service is held by email. online@tono.no to clarify the use. The price for a live broadcast of the service is kr 300,- each time. We also enter into a six-month agreement for up to 10 church services for NOK 2,500,- or for up to 26 church services for NOK 5,000,-
If the service is to be available online afterwards, we will enter into a separate agreement for this, as the production of a recording consisting of music and images involves a new area of rights – synchronization. Making a recording that will be available for up to 7 days costs kr 500,-. This is in addition to the price for the live broadcast of the service on kr 300, -.
Once the service has been approved, it can be streamed on any Norwegian website or social media platform.
After the service has been held, TONO must receive information from you about which musical works have been performed. This allows us to settle the money you pay for the live broadcast to the correct composers and lyricists. The reports can be submitted quarterly or after each service. Even if you report quarterly, you must complete one report form for each service. The report form can be found at here., and it is sent by email to online@tono.no.
