2 in 3 Europeans believe tech giants are more powerful than the EU

A new survey shows that a majority of Europeans believe that tech giants are more powerful than the EU. Moreover, 9 out of 10 Europeans want legislation that would ensure that music creators are paid when their music is distributed and consumed on user-generated platforms.

A new survey shows that a majority of Europeans believe that tech giants are more powerful than the EU. Moreover, 9 out of 10 Europeans want legislation that would ensure that music creators are paid when their music is distributed and consumed on user-generated platforms.

6,600 Europeans in eight countries responded to the survey, which was conducted by the market research company Harris Interactive on assignment from GESACThe survey shows that 67 percent of respondents believe that the tech companies behind the major media platforms are more powerful than the EU, 61 percent fear that the tech giants have a negative impact on European democracy, and 87 percent believe that music creators should be paid when their music is consumed on user-generated media platforms.

9 out of 10 Europeans believe the EU must create rules that guarantee that music creators are paid when their music is distributed on internet platforms such as YouTube and Facebook:


On September 12, the European Parliament will vote on what kind of text will move forward in the EU system towards the final implementation of the Digital Copyright Directive. For music creators, the key point is whether the directive will require the companies behind user-generated media platforms to enter into licensing agreements with copyright holders' organisations so that music creators can receive a fair and equitable share of the revenue their music generates for these companies.
